Many women experience andrognetic,  this type of hair thinning with age, but it can happen at any time. Other causes of female hair loss are medical conditions, stress and even weight loss. There is a vast range of medical conditions that can contribute to hair loss, from pregnancy to thyroid disorders. It is important to consult with your doctor at the first onset of hair loss for these reasons.

Male pattern alopecia (MPA) is the most common cause of hair loss in men, and is the male pattern most common indication for hair transplant in our practice. We don’t know exactly why some men are susceptible to this condition and others not, but we do know there is a genetic component. In the past, hair loss was thought to be transferred from the mother’s side, but we now know it is not so simple, and this condition can be inherited from either the mother or the father’s side, and skip certain relatives or generations entirely.

For many years, the strip method of harvesting follicular units was most common, and remains the most common method today. This involves excising a strip of hair from the posterior scalp, dividing the strip into individual follicles, and transplanting the hairs to the front of the scalp. The main benefit of strip harvesting is that it saves time for the surgeon, as the strip can then be handed off to multiple techs to divide the follicles simultaneously. The main downside of the strip is the rather long, linear scar that is left, and which occasionally stretches to become noticable.

The second method of follicular harvesting is FUE or follicular unit extraction, introduced in the late 90’s. This involves removing the invidual follicles one at a time from the occipital region. This method has historically been very time consuming, as only one person can be extracting at a given time. The benefit, however, is no linear scar, no stitches, and minimal to no pain following surgery.

The Neograft device utilized in our practice automates the FUE process, making it much quicker and more effective. Just as important, this makes the FUE procedure more affordable for patients (FUE is generally more expensive than strip transplant). Today, automated FUE is the most advanced method of hair restoration.
